Weston's Next Top Model
Stepping away from my masthead for a second, I decided to switch my attention to another pivotal aspect of my cover. My cover girl.
I have been looking into different ventures for what I will do for my cover photo, and more importantly who I will use as my cover model. As per fashion magazine genre conventions, I have to include a model in my cover photo, as that is who will display my clothing and be the main attention of the issue. The model not only represents the cover but in a way, the whole issue in itself. Thus, I wanted to use a cover model that is not afraid to take risks, and most importantly, have fun during a shoot. This article on the dos and don'ts of model photo shoots urge models to relax and get comfortable during their shoots because that is how the best photos come about. So, I want a subject who can bring my looks alive through their energy on set.
My first candidate for this position is my friend Juliana. Besides our friendly relationship, she would be a good candidate because of her knowledge of the expectations of this project, since she took this course last year. This knowledge would help the process go so much easier since she knows exactly what I am looking for, and may even be able to give me tips and tricks that she learned last year. Although she did not create a fashion magazine last year, she did opt for the magazine portfolio project so she could help me out with the overall production aspect of the magazine.
Furthermore, she has some experience in photography, proving that she could be a viable asset not only in front of the camera but behind it as well. The limited knowledge she has about cameras runs miles around my nearly nonexistent experience. I am also fairly confident that she has a Nikon camera that she would let me borrow, eliminating another worry of mine which is what equipment I would use during the photo shoot.
Adding to this list of reasons Juliana is likely my best bet for a model is that she also has experience in makeup. Thus, she will likely be able to do her own make-up for the photo shoot and I would not have to worry about finding a third party with make-up experience.
To test out our chemistry and Juliana's on-camera presence, the two of us ventured to Wynwood in a mock photo shoot this weekend. We used Juliana's camera, and she brought multiple outfits to change into, which would simulate the conditions of an actual photo shoot. Some of our shots are shown below.
I am very pleased with the experiment. I think Juliana shows a lot of on-camera potentials as she can serve both serious looks and more carefree laid- back ones as well. As predicted, she was able to do her own makeup for the shoot and helped me out with the camera work, which would really come in handy when it is time to actually shoot my cover. I think she would be a valuable asset in the production of the magazine, and could create some really cool covers. As of right now, she is my number one pick for a cover model.
